Andy Warhol, Three Self Portraits,1986
Three Andy Warhol self-portraits, bought the day before the artist died in 1987, are coming up for sale with an estimate of up to 15 million pounds ($29.3 million), said Sotheby's.
"Three Self Portraits" will be a highlight of a London sale of contemporary art on Feb. 27, the auction house said in an e-mailed statement. The three 40-inch-square silk-screen paintings -- in the red, white and blue of the American flag -- are estimated at between 10 pounds and 15 pounds, which would be a record for a Warhol self-portrait set.
"These self portraits are a last-chance buy," said Francis Outred, head of evening auctions at Sotheby's contemporary art department in London.
He said the portraits were acquired by a European collector directly from the artist's exhibition at the Anthony d'Offay Gallery in London shortly after they were painted in 1986. The transaction was completed the day before Warhol's death on Feb. 22, 1987. "There were only three others made, and this is the only complete set of three that exists," Outred said. The vendor hasn't been guaranteed a minimum price, he said.
Sotheby's said the sale, which also includes a Francis Bacon nude estimated to fetch at least 18 million pounds, has a total low estimate of 72 million pounds, making it the most valuable contemporary art sale Sotheby's has ever held in London.
For the first time Sotheby's will hold its February auction during a stand-alone "Winter Contemporary Art Week." Phillips de Pury has scheduled its sale to take place the following evening on Feb. 28. Christie's will be offering its contemporary art on Feb. 6, in the same week as the London impressionist and modern art auctions.
The auction result tracker Artnet said the current saleroom record for a Warhol self-portrait is the $12.4 million paid with fees for "Self Portrait (Green Camouflage)" at Sotheby's in New York in November 2007.
