李义弘,字在川,1941年生于台南县西港乡,曾先后获中山文艺奖、吴三连文艺奖,并任教台北艺术大学至2007年退休。

一路透过自然行旅的感染,李义弘将清新的笔墨结合摄影的文人情怀,以南台湾乡间的水墨写生崛起画坛,并在印度、尼泊尔的行旅经验中,找到超越自身的视界;直到五十岁后深居三芝乡间,终究确立了笔墨积淀的浑厚苍朴,与对故乡人文的热切关怀。这期间,透过对空间节奏的构思转换,与对纸张颜料特质的深究,他逐步将作品从写生的形象模拟,推展到画境的精剪妙裁,从而赋予内涵扩展的创作张力。

李义弘的创作时空虽平行于拼贴、喷洒、滴流的西方抽象移植潮,却反能从中擦出不同的个人特质。当前他已明确发展出主观结构的意念先行,使画风呈现更具当代意图的创造性--其构图趋向平面、单纯,而笔墨线条对于形象的取法则更为简约。

Lee Yi-Hong, courtesy name Chai-Chuan, was born at Township Sikang, Tainan County in 1941.  The winner of the Chungshan Literary & Artistic Award and the Wusanlien Literary & Artistic Award, Lee had been teaching at the Taipei National University of the Arts until his retirement in 2007.

Based on his journeys into nature, Lee Yi-Hong has remarkably joined his pristine ink stroke together with the spirit of humanity in photography.  He abruptly rose to be recognized for his still-life paintings of the rural southern Taiwan, and then surpassed himself and gained a whole new personal vision while traveling to India and Nepal.  Yet it was not until he was 50, living in Sanjr countryside, that he established his powerful style with accumulative ink and uncovered even greater affection within himself for his fellow compatriots.  Through clever maneuvering of space-composition and with his profound knowledge of painting media, Lee gradually transformed his panting style from still-life imagery to refined works with great connotation and creativity.

Under the localization trend of western abstract art movement, Lee has yet evolved an unique character and artistic individuality of his own. He sets himself a clear personal aim which is to give the top priority to subjective structure and, therefore, makes his painting style has more creativity with contemporary features. His composition tends to be simple and flat-surfaced; his ink strokes and lines are clean.
