Yang Gallery is proud to announce “Ritual of Remembrance ", the exhibition of Quentin Shih (Shi Xiao Fan) from November 13th 2010 until December 18th. Quentin Shih is a well know photographer who has worked closely with many international fashion labels. When Quentin Shih became unfulfilled working in commercial photography, he decided to produce a series on concept work with no relation to commercial photography. This exhibition shows Quentin Shih 's break away from commercial photography and the lead into his photography as a pure art form.
This exhibition displays three separate series of works; "The Stranger in the Glass Box", "The departing Youths" and "Citizen of the State". Quentin Shih hopes that the participating audience in the exhibition will feel like they are participating in a ceremony and this will evoke a review of a specific experience from a time period of mankind.
Quentin Shih, like many other Chinese artists, uses the Cultural Revolution as theme in a much of his artwork. Many of these artists turn images from the Cultural Revolution into commercial features and consumer products. This is undoubtedly a contradicting characteristic, but the artists do this because Chinese people do not want to remember the Cultural Revolution. They only want to remember it as a dream, which they do not want to encounter again. The actual Cultural Revolution did not inspire the artist, only the effects of the revolution and the concept of the event. The concept of social formation will affect not only this generation but for generations to come. While China's people move from collectivism towards rebellious individualism, they will keep in good spirits and be open - minded.
