In June, you are cordially invited by Inart Space to visit the first Hsu Yung-Hsu Solo Exhibition in Tainan.

Previously working as a teacher, zither performer, and even dreamed of becoming a professional athlete, the life journey of Hsu Yung-Hsu took a turn at aged 31. An invitation from a friend to co-establish a pottery studio in Kaohsiung has since opened an artist door for him. In the early stage of learning, Hsu Yung-Hsu started from self-taught. While fumbling in the process, he was dissatisfied why pottery would confine to craft into practical “utensils.’’ He then gradually turned towards the development of modeling art. In comparison to the performance of glaze, he focused on embryonic modeling creations that allow him to master the firing results more easily.

At the initial stage of learning, Hsu Yung-Hsu bought as many renowned books containing the knowledge of “pottery” and “ceramic” as possible. He learnt hard by himself, up to the extent of jotting down the entire English books with dense notes. This artist who cannot help working with the kiln has displayed the strongest determination and perseverance to develop his own creations up to the extreme. Later on, after enrolling in Graduate Institute of Applied Arts, Tainan National University of the Arts, he won First Prize in International Ceramics Festival MINO, Japan in 2008 after going through solid training and hardship. He has since then become well-known. The pottery work “As Big As a Nest and yet As Thin As a Cicada’s Wing” has become the most important insignia of Hsu Yung-Hsu.

In 2009, Hsu Yung-Hsu settled down in a spacious Guantian Construction Studio equipped several big kilns. After carrying out numerous scientific experiments at this large base, Hsu Yung-Hsu continued to meticulously develop masterpieces one after another, such as the replicas of an ootheca, an entangled silk ribbon, and a nest. Just like an athlete and zither performer in the past, one would always find his hands being wound with bandages and medicated pads. In pottery creations, Hsu Yung-Hsu has also chosen to endure himself in hard physical labor by marking his fingerprints and palm prints deeply onto clay and ceramic. Each tiny component is indeed a unique body signature of the artist that cannot be duplicated.

In this exhibition, Inart Space will display a total of 25 art works of Hsu Yung-Hsu created between 2014 ~ 2016, as well as an uncommon onsite exquisite lighting display especially designed for Inart Space. You are cordially invited to the exhibition to appreciate a magnificent array of dark and white pottery art pieces created by the artist.
