Take it easy
Curator / Wu Fang
My friend, before you say goodbye, I’ll give my word with a Chinese farewell idiom plus a slogan on Alps Mountain.
‘Take it easy, enjoy!’
-Guangqian Zhu “Talk about Beauty”
The famous Chinese esthetician Guangqian Zhu says:“ ‘feeling interesting’ is to enjoy. Your life is depending on whether you can admire many things or not. And ‘admire’ means ‘the enjoyment doing for nothing’. When people enjoying anything, he has the same freedom with gods, and also is blessed.” At the end of
It sounds really enviable that a people who can keep interest on everything in the world and continue to appreciate this fun. As one of the famous ink work artist after seventy, Zhenghua He shows us his ‘fun’. He has a color of distinct personality. Different from other ink work artists who simply pursue traditional techniques, Zhenghua’s artwork laid more emphasis on screen language and the connecting of contemporary context. He always maintains curiosity and sense of fun for art, life and himself. In this exhibition, his new silk ink work painting ‘River Crossing’ series and ‘Worshipping Mountain’ series continue to build his ‘Alienated’ space, and with it, formed a time-space shuttle as well as a deeper thinking. He use the picture full with Chinese element to establish a connection with past. Zhenghua He give us his consideration of contemporary ink work with an‘interesting’ way. He extended his ‘appreciation’ of his life to an exploring of ‘doing something’, and he transformed this exploring into the reflections and inquiries on personal art and the development of contemporary art. The ‘traditional element’ which shows in his artwork has become the ‘vital clues’ of how his personal interest formed. He is trying to provoke us to doubt the reality and our present for the development of contemporary art. In this exhibition, there is also an installation. The device on the top of the gallery is called‘Utopia Light’. It brings his ‘Alienated’ space to our eyes. He is sharing his appreciation vision, track of his exploration as well as his pure curiosity for art. We can say that this installation is a new attempt on his personal art style, and also is another challenge to audience and artists’ “Sympathetic”.
I wonder that what kind of expression audience will produce when they see Zhenghua He’s works. Would it be‘ smile’? Or‘ confuse’? Yet, it is sure that they will have a nice reflection. What a wonderful sense it would be! In his works, people enjoy their experience, their understanding and their true feelings. In his ‘Alienated’ space, more people try to escape from a cage composed by boring and get into the fantasy and wonderful ‘new world’.
‘Take it easy, enjoy!’ Please do not being numb because of the fast-paced life. Please do not being timid because of the disordered conditions. I hope that this exhibition, this artist and with it his artworks will allow more people to slow down the pace of life and bring more ‘enjoyment’ and ‘fun’ to their life. Certainly, facing at the bubble development of Chinese contemporary art, do we have the responsibility to slow it down?
