GAO LEI’s works are mostly landscapes. He depicts nature as an indirect reference to the society, which he intends to express his questioning towards the society in a calm and peaceful manner. The use of the light grey colour with no character is a reference to the colour of the heavy industry city where the artist was born. The works are divided into two or more seemingly not related hierarchical order which these layers influenced, fight and fragmented each other. The center of the paintings are intentionally overexposed and blurred to subvert the traditional ways of seeing, as a reflection of the artist’s questioning of social reality, certainty and the continuity of life.
