SDL+MSLL

MSLL: A Rising Art Quartet from Taiwan

MSLL (MaSingLingLuna) is an art quartet composed of four female artists from Taiwan: MANIHOO, Singway, Lingling, and Luna. MANIHOO, Singway and Lingling started their collaboration as a trio, called Ma Sing Ling (MSL), in 2011. Their debut series, “Form of Unity,” was soon selected into the 159th Autumn Exhibition organized by Royal West of England Academy, United Kingdom (2011). Their creation also drew attention from Taiwan’s heavy-weight art collectors, who placed Ma Sing Ling’s artworks in their conglomerate museums. With Luna’s joining in, MSLL was formed in 2016.

Knowing each other for more than 10 years, these four young artists all embarked upon their creation of art in 2009. Lingling began as a photographer with work capturing the beauty of still life. Singway likes to use oil painting to illustrate her life philosophy. MANIHOO specializes in mixed media for portraying the purity of child-like innocence. Luna’s work is full of the atmosphere of carefree happiness and fairy romance.

They four started to work as a team, partially because of their experiences in abstract painting, and partially because of their enrollment in the A.R.T. exposition. The A.R.T. requires its participants to constantly transcend themselves and bring something new to the viewers, and this sparked a “wild” idea among them: collaborative creation.

Creating artwork as a team is quite new in Taiwan – though not uncommon globally (e.g., Gilbert & George and the Chapman Brothers). Fortunately, their “wild” thought won appreciation from Master Lee, A.R.T.’s curator. Master Lee even joins in to give them advice and help elicit these young artists’ potentials. Now we have a new collaborative formation: SDL+MSLL.

SDL+MSLL: The Art of Collaboration Inspired by Go Chess

The beauty of collaborative creation is to allow each member to develop his/her different characteristics and meanwhile have all these differences harmonized into one that has its own flares. The challenge is then: How to achieve this goal?

Master Lee found the answer from Go chess, an abstract strategy board game invented in China 2500 years ago. The playing pieces of the game are called “stones” – black and white for the respective players who place the stones on the vacant intersections (“points”) of a board in turn. As a Go player, Master Lee has been noticing, “The strategic placement of black and white stones is just like an awesome abstract painting,” and this inspired him the art of collaboration.

When creating a new work, they first discuss what they wish to express and then divide the creation process into four steps in accord with four major schematic stages of the Go chess – namely, setting the stone (dingshi 定石), layout (buju 布局), strategic move and appropriation (tengnuo 腾挪), and closure (shouguan 收官). As to work allotment, it depends on the member’s art style and personality.

Master Lee usually takes the first move – to “set the stones,” that is, to scheme out the overall picture. The Second step, “layout,” is taken by Lingling for her composed personality, and Singing for her philosophical background. Their job is to bring balance to certain points of the painting. Next is “strategic move and appropriation,” at which stage MANIHOO and Luna, both are lively and agile, will add dynamics and vibration to it. The final stage, “closure,” is done by all five through thorough discussion and they collaboratively give finishing touch to complete a magnificent artwork.

“Clear Mirror.Image” and “Necessary.Bodhi” are their latest series.
