When Mimi the Thief was little she had a companion who was as white as snow from head to toe, named Little White.
Mimi the Thief is a yellow, black, and white cat calico cat that is physically small compared to others, but her heart and soul are larger tan most. From watching the way she moves, I believe she has retained a certain wildness inherited from her feline ancestors. At times she walks with defiance and intent or with caution and trepidation. Her two emerald eyes can be extremely warm-hearted and gentle in one moment and then quite devious in the next.
When they started to play hide and seek, Little White was only about 3 or 4 months old; Mimi the Thief was not quite half a year old. Their favorite pastime was to sneak into the dark space under the kitchen sink. The rules were: whoever reached the hole first won. The winner could spend the afternoon sleeping there without being bothered by the loser –and because Little White was smaller than Mimi the Thief, he would win all the time.
Everyday while sleeping on the sofa, as the elder sister, Mimi the Thief would pull Little White in a close embrace and affectionately groom him. They were incredibly cute and I was very moved by such tenderness that I would often watch them for at least half the day. But soon I discovered something a little strange. While Mimi was grooming Little White to sleep, in a flash I saw her bar her teeth and fiercely raise her head, making Little White shake with a jolt. Yet just as he was about to wake up, Mimi began to lick –lick with a sense of earnestness and responsibility –and Little White was calm again. Hardly fifteen minutes passed and Little White shuddered violently –he nearly sprang to his feet and took off running.
I wanted to know what was actually going on but before I had any time to move, Mimi had ripped out a major part of Little White’s beard. As everyone knows, cat’s whiskers act as a ruler. The next day and the day after, without his whiskers as a guide, Little White did not dare enter the small space under the sink. Needless to say, Mimi the Thief stopped grooming him and in that dark peaceful space she fell into a deep sleep.
After a short time, Little White disappeared –I don’t know if it was because of this incident or not.
A cat’s cunning and calculative nature is no less or more than that of human beings.
