Shi Dachan , born in Nangong, Hebei, is a Buddhist monk who is a poet, calligrapher and painter. His monastic name is Pusheng, and he also has the sobriquet Zisong Xuanzhu. He is an autodidact and a child prodigy who fell in love with poetry, calligraphy and painting at an early age. He achieved Zen enlightenment on the basis a gradual understanding of aesthetic subtleties. His calligraphy and painting is grounded on but not restricted by classical forms. He has his own distinctive style. His thought encompasses the new and unfamiliar and also the profound and remote, and a tranquil and natural mood pervades all his work. His poetry has a primitive simplicity and naturalness. His poetry draws upon the principles of calligraphy; his calligraphy draws upon the principles of painting, and his painting draws upon the principles of nature; and they all are imbued with the spirit of Zen. When he left home to become a monk, he went to Mount Jiuhua to study Zen. Later he went to Mount Wutai to worship, and he composed and recited poetry as a record of the inner journey he made in the course of that expedition. He is an advocate of using art to communicate deeper truth, and he strives to emulate the sterling example Gautama Buddha set in tirelessly educating the people.
