Bats
'Bats' is my most recent work. It produced to compliment the 'tiny death' tryptich Wang Ying first selected for the current exhibition. I came across the bat-patterned paper while I was buying new drawing materials during the first few weeks of my stay in Beijing in April, 2014.
In appreciation I copied the front through onto the reverse side. Then I added ’my qi’, ink stroke by ink stroke. This timeconsuming process is destructive and ambiguous, forcing and destroying emptiness; my mind oscillates between thinking and not thinking until it is freed by repetitive action.
In Western culture bats represent darkness and evil and symbolize Vampires. I made an immediate connection between the pattern and my time in mystical Bohemia, where the ’tiny death’ piece was produced. Back then I carried out in-situ research on historical founds. Skeletons were found buried outside the city walls with arms crossed and stones in their mouths. It was believed this would prevent the bodies from rising from their graves. I had also read Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’, which was based on a myth circulating in the very city of Cesky Krumlov. In Gothic literature, Vampires connote dark desires and powerful sexual urges as they’re still embodied in today’s popular TV series.
In Chinese culture, however, bats have a far more positive connotation: they symbolize wealth, longevity, peace, good health and a good death. This admiration began thousands of years before Christ. Sometimes people view the Oriental world as an interplay between active and passive forces (male and female). Bats were thought to embody the male principle, while flowers and fruits were considered female. Therefore, bats was often displayed with the peach, a common female fertility symbol. Peaches, being one of man’s favourite fruits were first cultivated in China about 5,000 years ago. Before that, these fruits relied on bats for the dispersal of their seeds.
In China, the symbol for bat is [biānfú]蝙蝠,’Fú’ 蝠 is also the symbol for ’good luck’. Furthermore bats are considered a classic Chinese feng shui symbol of prosperity.
蝙蝠
”蝙蝠“是我最近的一部作品。它的问世是为了赞扬”小小死神“三联画。汪颖最初将其选作为当时的展览品。2014年4月,我在北京待的前几周里,当我在买新的绘画材料时我无意中发现了这一蝙蝠图案的设计纸。
在欣赏过程中我通过反面复制了正面。然后添加了“我的气“,一笔一笔。这个耗时的过程是破坏性的,模糊的,强制并摧毁空虚;我的心在思考和不思考之间摇摆不定,直到它在重复的动作中被释放。
在西方文化中,蝙蝠代表着黑暗和邪恶,并象征着吸血鬼。我将这一图案与我在神秘的波西米亚(”小小死神“这一作品的发祥地)度过的时光直接联系起来。那时候,我开展了一个关于历史发现的原位研究。骨骸被发现埋葬在城墙外,双臂交叉且嘴里含着石块。人们相信这会阻止尸体从其墓中复活。我也曾拜读过布莱姆·斯托克的《德古拉》,且这本书正是以流传于克鲁姆洛夫这座城市的神话为基础。在哥特文学中,吸血鬼意味着邪恶的欲望和强烈的性冲动,正如其仍在当今流行电视剧中所体现的那样。
然而,在中国文化中,蝙蝠具有更为积极的内涵:其象征财富、长寿、和平、健康和善终。这种崇赞美始于公元前数千年。有时候人们将东方世界视作阳性力量和阴性力量(雄性和雌性)相互作用的结果。人们认为蝙蝠象征着雄性的准则,而花朵和水果代表雌性。因此,蝙蝠经常和桃子放在一起展示,桃子是雌性繁殖力的一般象征。桃子,作为人们最喜欢的水果之一,大约5000年之前,最先在中国种植。在这之前,这些水果依赖蝙蝠来散播它们的种子。
在中国,蝙蝠的符号是[biānfú]蝙蝠,‘fú'蝠也是“好运”的象征。另外,蝙蝠被认为是中国风水中繁荣兴旺的典型象征。
