Vitamin Z 43F
Chen Wenbo began his artistic career by experimenting with installation works, before turning to painting in 1996. His first series of paintings, named Vitamin Z, depicts young people painted in bright colours, creating a fresh Pop Art style. Eventually Chen Wenbo abandoned the portraits and turned to objects from everyday life, like seats, toilet paper or CDs, painted on large scale canvas, sometimes using them as allegories to evoke social issues. Chen Wenbo begins these paintings by taking photographs and manipulating them with computer design programs, removing the background and modifying the colours to create an ideal image out of time and context.
Chen Wenbo’s Vitamin Z series was inspired by the young girls that frequent night clubs in Chongqing. The artist observed how these young hipsters used the latest trends in make-up and clothing to change their appearance, making it difficult to tell what they really look like. Vitamin Z series expresses this uncertainty of self-image common among youth that results in a desire to re-fashion themselves. The girls in Chen Wenbo’s paintings have their skin turned into a plastic surface, while pills of various colours are spread across their faces and the hair is shaved off of their heads - making them look like genderless industrial products.
