Fighting 98-13 is part of a series that Yang Shaobin started
in the late 1990s that uses dark red tones to depict a vicious
battle. Distorted bodies with savage faces and clenched fists
torture each other, biting ears and grabbing flesh. Inspired by
life and art history, these violent images qualify Yang Shaobin's
“specialized aesthetic”, which he uses to express moral
disorder and confusion. He treats the figures and forms in a way
that gives the spectator an unreal feeling, a sense of alarm and“ a
fright that goes straight to the soul.”
